Dean learned card tricks to make him laugh, practicing in the passenger seat while Dad drove through the night, with cards that were worn and dirty at the edges. When they were younger, playing Texas Hold 'Em on cheap motel room bedspreads, Dean never let Sam win. Except for all the times he did. Sometimes, when Dean dreams, it's about the sound of socked-feet sliding over slick blankets, and piles of nickels and dimes falling down. Sometimes it's beer bottles crashing together. And sometimes, it's Sam laughing, his hand wrapped around the back of Dean's neck, thumb tucked up under Dean's ear like it's telling him a secret. Lovely, evocative first kiss for Sam and Dean.

"If this is out of pity or…or something…" It hurts him to say those words, she knows. Despite everything, he still has his pride. He needs comfort like everyone else—like she does—but he'll never admit it. / Walking over to him, she snakes her hands beneath his flannel shirt and rests them on his hips, the body-warmed fabric brushing over her skin. He's tense beneath her hands and she leans in, pressing her nose to his chest. "It's not pity, Dean," she says, her lips brushing against his t-shirt. / She really wants him to touch her. Fantastic, achy post 5.02 Dean/Ellen, hot and shot through with heartache and hope.

Lovely snippet of post 5.02 Dean/Ellen. When she straightens and turns, he's right there, and the space he takes up is large and warm and decidedly, unmistakably male. "Sit with me. Have a pull on the bottle." She freezes at the sound of his voice, low and unmistakable. She's been around the block a time or two, after all. It's just … well, it's been awhile since she heard a man sound like that around her.

Somewhat to his bemusement, sharing accommodations has actually been a reasonably positive experience thus far. Jim has his irritating quirks, including a complete disregard for personal space, inability to not read over Leonard's shoulder, providing commentary while watching vids and talking with his mouth full. But on the plus side, he keeps his side of the room picked up, goes elsewhere to party, doesn't ask personal questions, has decent taste in music and is surprisingly well-read. If he HAS to have a roommate, he could have done a lot worse. Wonderful backstory for McCoy, explaining how he can already be a hotshot doctor and only be a few years older than Kirk.

The Time Has Come to Be Gone by [info]jujuberry136
A really enjoyable SPN/Criminal Minds crossover - the writing is a little clunky, and it doesn't take into account the state of Sam and Dean's relationship in early season 5, but the outsider POV on Sam and Dean, plus the interaction between the BAU team and the Winchesters, is a lot of fun.

Absolutely heartbreaking look at Sam, post 4.22. The second person POV really works here.

That was twice now that Zachariah had tried to reduce Dean into an eating-and-fucking golem, a mindless beast that could be controlled with fresh meat and other, more delectable flesh. / Zachariah hadn't counted on his little helper, his mud-monkey, his weapon of choice having a memory, or at least fragments of one that he could slide together to stay whole, stay strong, even after his descent into hell, where he was harrowed for longer than he'd been alive. / And Dean remembered. Maybe not everything, maybe not always clearly, but that simply meant he was human. Sam, Dean, Castiel and bumper cars. Adorable.

Anatomy of a Prank by [info]xylodemon
Their first proper prank had taken place in their fourth month of school. Remus considered it proper because it had been a collective effort and marginally successful. It had also been a premeditated attack, rather than a random act brought on by boredom, circumstance, and Sirius' chronic inability to behave normally. On that landmark occasion, Remus had learned three rather important things: Sirius was madder than a cupboard full of Jarveys, James' sense of adventure was really just a death wish in a nice set of robes, and no good could possibly come from messing with two bags of itching powder, a breeding pair of Bowtruckles, and an impossibly large brassiere in the same afternoon. SO FREAKING AWESOME AND HILARIOUS! Totally nails James & Sirius's gleeful anarchy, and Remus & Peter's slightly stealthier penchant for mischief. I love the running gags that are never explained, and the many and varied descriptions of James's hair. *hearts*

Building Dean Van Halen by [info]caffienekitty
"I nearly bought a VW van, you know," John said, slurring a little from pain, exhaustion, and the only available anesthetic. / Bobby smirked at John, making sure his shoulder was just dislocated and not broken. "That so." / "Best thing I ever didn't do. Some guy, Van Halen, he told me I should get the Impala instead." / "Yeah? / "Yeah. I think..." Memory swam to the surface. "Bobby, I think he was a hunter. Thought he was nuts back then, he asked about cold spots and cattle mutilations and crap." / "Coulda been I guess. Hunting goes a long way back." John figures it out, just pre-season 1. Heartbreaking.

Devil's Rope by [info]harrigan
I enjoyed this pre-series look at how much, when push comes to shove, Sam is willing to sacrifice to save Dean. Interesting hunt, and a nice look at John and Dean as well.

First We Take It Easy by [info]dotfic
Sam: one head wound, one dislocated shoulder, one sprained ankle. / Dean: two cracked ribs, one deep gash in his leg, two broken fingers. / Apocalypse: averted. / Dean thought they'd gotten off easy. Lovely futurefic in which the boys take some time to heal after averting the apocalypse.

Finding Wednesday by [anonymous]
That was stirring up trouble, Dean figured. He'd decided that while he was sitting there alone: that he was eight years old, and he could do what he could do, and he couldn't do what he couldn't do. Getting PO'ed because he couldn't drive, or go out with Dad went he went after the bad things, or make decisions about where they went or when – that wouldn't accomplish anything. He was a kid. Takes what could have been a really sappy premise - 8yo Dean saves a kitten and nurses it back to health - and knocks it out of the park.

Like a Fiddle by [info]krisomniac
"They played us good, didn't they." / Sam smiled. "Yeah, they did." / "And now we have an apocalypse to stop?" / Sam ran a hand through his messy sweat-dry hair. "Looks like." / "So it's just another day at the office." Boys! lovely coda for 4.22.

The brief lives and many deaths of Castiel, Angel of the Lord. So what if Castiel is like Kenny from South Park? *dies* (er, pun completely intended) SO AWESOME! (also, in the interests of full disclosure, written at my instigation and betaed by me.)

Palindromes by [anonymous]
Sharp, heartbreaking AU in which John dies and Mary survives to teach her boys to hunt. The thing about unconditional love, Sam had decided, surrounded by Freud and Hume and all the deconstructions, classifications, bifurcations, iterations, semantics of the heady psychoanalysis of academia - or perhaps in spite of all those things - was that if he didn’t hate the person he loved, it probably wasn't unconditional love at all. Everyone despises something, some failure, some constriction, something human about those they love most. / It was easy to think in such abstractions, so far removed from the irresistible, overpowering combined gravity of mom and Dean. He realizes this now. / Sam shifts minutely against the leather, sees Dean start, and wonders vaguely if he would hate his father too, if he were still alive.

A Perfect Day by [anonymous]

There Is Nothing Frightening by [info]tripoli8
Dean had barely even started to work out what had really been going on since he sold his soul, but he'd already decided that absolutely none of it had been made better by the two of them constantly trying to game each other. When he stopped to think about it, he had no idea how he'd managed to second-guess the motives behind Sam's every move for most of the past two years; it was so goddamned tiring. Really interesting post-ep for 4.22.

When in Arbuckle by [info]debbiel66
Lovely look at Sam and Dean as teenagers, with Sam already planning his escape, and Dean knowing something big is coming but not knowing what to do about it. Dean's not sure what's bothering him. It's almost like he wants something but doesn't know how to put it into words. He's never really thought much about what he wants because it's always been fairly simple. Dean wants Dad to be proud of him, and he wants Sammy to be safe and happy. He wants to find the thing that killed Mom, and he wants to help as many people as he can along the way. / And Dean also wants to watch the world go by from his own front yard. It's weird, but Dean wouldn't mind staying in Arbuckle a little bit longer. / But Dean's not Sam. No good can come from thinking about what can't be. What Dean does have is Sam and Dad. And that's enough - it's always been more than enough, and there's no reason that can't stay the same.

"Tell you what: you buy the first round tonight, I'll pretend you never said that." / He agreed with haste. "Deal." Remix of The Hubbert Peak from a wonderfully matter-of-fact Max's POV. *heart*

"I know we were close," he says without looking up. "We loved each other very much, didn't we?" / "Booth." / "I know this because everybody else is ready to let go and start over, but you're not." He lifts his head, apologetic. "I'm sorry I don't remember the things you find worth holding on to," he says quietly. Sniffly good Booth/Brennan in the wake of the season finale.
